Paid Family Leave (PFL)
Paid Family Leave (PFL) is a state program that provides employees some compensation to care for parents, children, spouses and/or domestic partners or to bond with a new child. The cost of this benefit is paid by the employee as part of a required payroll deduction (state withholding). This program is administered by the Employment Development Department (EDD).
All employers with employees covered under State Disability Insurance (SDI) or a Voluntary Plan Insurer must comply. PFL covers employees who would suffer a wage loss because of a family care need, but does not provide job protection or return rights. PFL benefits last up to 6 weeks in a 12-month period and require a 7-day waiting period.
